Chester Byrd

Chester Byrd Park is named after the City’s first African American Mayor, who first served in 1983.
Mr. Byrd earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education-Science from Bethune-Cookman
College in Daytona Beach in 1949 and went on to achieve his Masters of Education from the
University of Miami in 1963. For 32 years, Mr. Byrd enhanced education in Florida as a teacher,
coach, athletic director, student council sponsor, curriculum committee chairman, dean, and
assistant principal. In addition to his contributions to education, Mr. Byrd served his community
through various organizations including Dania’s Human Relations Board, Planning and Zoning
Board, Dade County’s Community Relations Board and Housing Committee, and Broward
County’s Community Development Committee. He was also a champion for affordable housing
and was a founding member of the Dania Economic Development Corporation. Mr. Byrd died on
April 25,1988 while serving a second term as Mayor of the City of Dania Beach. He is survived by
his wife Eugenia Byrd, and two sons; Carlton, and Chester. His third son Andre is deceased.
